Last week, Carvosso’s saved my life. I pretended that I’d had a table for two booked, for three weeks when, in fact, I booked it on the morning of my girlfriend’s birthday. The management were even in on the swindle, by providing a cake with a short burst of ‘happy birthday’, thrown in for good measure.

I thought they’d gone way beyond the call of duty, however, when I noticed Grilled Dover Sole, on the menu. Perhaps it was just coincidence that Dover Soul is my non-meat-eating girlfriend’s favourite meal. Luckily, the chef knew exactly what to do with a fresh Dover Soul, on someone’s birthday: served piping hot, with new potatoes and a tossed salad, this was a recipe for one happy bunny. My steak was really not at all bad, bordering on really bloody good, in fact. Top marks, for food AND service. We'll be coming again.

Myself and my husband have been to Carvosso's a couple of times, and have always had excellent meals, but we went on Saturday 8th August and were disappointed with the food that we were served. Our first course was deep fried calamari (which was from the bar menu), this starter was OK, bit soggy, but we have cooked calamari at home, and ours is definitely much nicer. I plumped for the rib eye steak (medium done) but this bit of steak was tough and looked like it was more 'well done' inside. I also had to ask for more Bernaise sauce, as the first pot was only filled half way, but my chips and salad were delicious. My husband's meal was calves liver served with pancetta and mashed potato - he thought it was OK, but it could have been a lot better and tastier. We both went for the creme brulee, which was actually cold at the bottom of the ramekin dish.. which I have never experience that before...The service felt a little rushed as well. All in all we probably won't go back to Carvosso's again but I must admit that the facade of the building and the inside of the restaurant and bar area is lovely and inviting.

We dined at this restaurant on Saturday 18th October 2008 I ordered the fishcakes and my partner ordered the prawn starter both dishes were served with an extremely hot chili sauce. We are both parfait with eating hot food but this was uncomfortably hot. Our main course of fillet steak arrived which was not cooked according to our request and the pepper sauce was bland. The service was very hit and miss and we were surprised to hear the staff making derogatory comments in french for which I paid the pleasure of a 12.5% Service charge Merci! Will not return. Loved Carvossos, especially the young Australian girl, Miranda - great food and fantastic service - thanks Miranda for being so cheerful, helpful and ensuring we had a great night - nothing was ever too much trouble!!
